I really like this. Apart from explaining what should be common sense, it reminds that the simple details make a difference. I like how it says clean and neat clothes matter more than expensive ones, anyone can be considered pretty by following simple instructions such as wearing flattering clothes, paying attention to their health and complexion and stepping up their self grooming game a little. The fact that the lady (I guess a Miss Ratherly Stern was mentioned somewhere) tells the girls that they shouldn't worry about being pretty or popular.

Timeless advices or just a fun to watch representation of everyday fashion of 40s.

...sans operator gadgetry, tells you all you need to know. All in just one film. She covers it all and Ponds products are a big factor. No chick has any excuse for walking around looking ugly. Period. Seriously, this film is excellent. Every mom's daughter should be shown this (even today) a year or two after showing her that film about Mollie's menarche.

The girls in that audience however are too far gone. Most of them look like a bunch of Armenian refugees who just got off a bus from Kars. Yet our teacher mentions not a peep about tweezers or electrolysis.

"A gracious good afternoon..."

Subject: Notes on Good Grooming for Girls.
I did some investigating and according to my research the lecturer in this film was a real life beauty consultant named Mary Stuyvesant. There isn't much information on her that I can find and she apparently never authored any books (or if she did I can not find any evidence of it). However, this is what I've been able to piece together about her. Mary began her career as an English stage actress and eventually moved to New York City where she hosted a radio broadcast for children on personal hygiene. After her radio show ceased production, she made a career out of lecturing at high schools and women's club meetings in the 1940's and 1950's on the importance of good grooming. She was also affiliated with the company Ponds (as in the cold cream) around this time. Thus, there is quite a bit of product placement in this film. During her career as a public speaker, she continued to appear on radio and on television.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It's a well presented, quaint, and charming 1940's period piece on grooming and beauty for girls and young women. I much of this advice could be still be used today. My only complaint is I wish the film was complete. The beginning of the film is apparently missing and there are several weird edits in the film too.

A particularly strange film about, yes, good grooming for girls about dress, makeup and hair hosted by a strangely dressed, makeupped and hairdoed woman. One of the particular aspects of this film that makes it so bizarre is it's gonzo color, not too sure if it's because of it's age or film stock (My guess it's the latter) but it just makes the colors in the film very washed out and muted, which doesn't help in a film like this. Makeup and hair look all wrong for the film. It doesnt help that everyone, and I mean everyone in the film is so bad acting. Just dreadful. The advice given is ok, in terms of making girls look pretty and all, but the presentation is downright ugly. I too want to shake someone over this. A MUST SEE on this site!
